Craft Recap: Balloon Pop Painting

So, I'm really excited about the fact that I am trying hard to commit to posting a new blog entry once a week, even if it's something really simple and small, the consistency of it will hopefully make this blog last longer.  Over the past year I've created so many things that I really wanted to share with everyone but never had the discipline to sit down and blog about until now.  I was smart enough to gather photos throughout the year in case I was ever able to commit to posting them- and this would be the day.

The next few posts I'll be putting up will be a quick review of all the things I've done in the past that I found worth blogging about.  Let's start off with some of last years paintings I painted.

Coming back from Europe I had a lot of inspiration to create things and the first thing I really wanted to do was some balloon painting!  It was a simple enough craft to do and it seemed like it would be a lot of fun- especially with some friends.  I gathered up the necessary materials needed:

-a 16x20 stretch canvas (or any canvas really)
-tape (we used painting tape)
-acrylic paint (I got a bunch of cheap ones from the craft store)
-balloons (dollar store)
-sewing needles (ideally you'd use darts but I didn't have any)
-straws (to act as a blowdart with the needles)

First we had to fill all the balloons with paint, which was difficult at first until you got a technique down.  Then using tape we taped the paint filled balloons to the canvas (I secured my balloons with extra sewing needles because the weight of the paint was a little heavy for the balloon itself)

It took us awhile to get it all set up, seeing as we had never done this before and was playing it all by ear.  Needless to say we got a bit of paint all over us.  Once it was all done and we had strategically placed each balloon where we wanted it, we headed outside and the real fun began!

Balloons with different coloured paint placed exactly where I wanted with tape and needles

It was a beautiful sunny day right in the middle of July, so we had to take full advantage of it by going outside.  Our friend Shannon came and helped us place the canvases right up against the fence of the backyard.  We had no newspaper so we used cardboard boxes to catch and dripping paint.

We started to attempt to pop the balloons with out homemade blow darts but even with all our strength, the needles didn't seem to pierce the balloons hard enough to make them pop.  So we eventually improvised and popped them by hand which got all of us covered in paint!

They ended up turning so much better than I expected and it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.  The clean up after was even that bad considering how much paint we got everywhere (I got it all over my hair while my friend Wallis got it all over her face).  But considering how much fun it was, and the result this is one painting activity that will always be on my to do list!  Let me know if you'd ever done something similar to this or considered doing it!
